(SPOILERS AHEAD!) Few shows capture the kind of mother/daughter bond that Gilmore Girlsdoes, and with Netflix’s four-part revival series of the hit show coming Nov. 25th, now would be the time to start binge watching.
Actually, that’s a lie. It’s a long series. You should’ve started, like, a month ago.
Either way, the point is you should watch it, and you should watch it with your mom, your grandma, or anyone in your life who has served as a maternal figure. And what better way to invite your loved one to binge-watch the series with you than with one of these cute Giphy invites? Here’s why.
1. On Gilmore Girls, you see different types of mother/daughter relationships.
One of the coolest parts of the show is that you get to see the relationships between all three generations of Gilmore Girls. Emily and Lorelai are mother and daughter, and they don’t exactly meet eye-to-eye on a lot of things, but Rory, Lorelai’s daughter, has a great relationship with her. Lorelai and Rory are best friends, so the dynamic between them is heartwarming and actual #FamilyGoals. The scenes between the three of them —when you see the stark differences in their personalities but also the strong similarities— are especially sweet.
2. You get to see motherhood from a mother’s perspective, if you aren’t already one.
I don’t have kids yet, so I obviously don’t know what that’s like, but seeing how Lorelai feels about Rory, including the sacrifices she makes for her and the way that her decisions make her feel, really impacted me. Their on-screen relationship helped me catch a glimpse into the unconditional love that mothers feel for their daughters, and gave me a new appreciation for my own mother.
3. It really teaches you that no mother is perfect.
I think one of the hardest lessons a person learns growing up is that, despite how we see our parents as little kids, they’re actually flawed human beings. Lorelai is a flawed human being, and you see that from the very first episode. There are no rose-colored glasses. She is clearly learning as she goes and thankfully, her relationship with Rory is so good that Rory appreciates it.
4. It shows you what a mother/daughter relationship has the potential to be like.
Lorelai and Rory spend Saturday nights watching TV and eating junk food together. They tell each other everything: they’re honest, they take care of each other, and they’re there for each other through thick and thin. At one point in the series, there’s a rift in their relationship, and you can tell how difficult it is for them to be apart. They’re best friends, and although the show is fictional, that kind of relationship isn’t impossible- it just requires lots of love and patience.
5. It gives you a lesson in hard work.
Lorelai works from the bottom up throughout her career at the Independence Inn, to the point where she eventually opens her own inn with her best friend. Rory is a brainiac, and works day and night to get into Chilton prep school, then Yale University. Their personalities are totally different but the show is a testament to the idea that with enough support from your loved ones, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.
