Maintaining a happy and healthy monogamous relationship can take two lifetimes of experience to master. Even then we will not have learned enough to perfect them. Relationships are influenced by so many different factors. It takes a lot of patience, discipline, understanding, love, and a gang of other attributes just to keep them on track.
Every relationship is different so, I can't tell you exactly what to do to be happy with yours. However, what I can do is leave you with these seven pieces of relationship advice that everyone occasionally needs to hear.
1. Know your worth.
Before you get into a relationship of any kind, knowing your self-worth is a major key. If you value yourself first, no one else can tell you that are worthless or treat you like you are less than you are.
2. Love alone isn't enough.
Falling in love with someone is a great feeling. It can make you feel like you're on top of the world, but that alone isn't enough to stand the test of time and all of the hurdles that will come your way during a relationship. Things like trust, forgiveness, acceptance, and respect are a must. Without those, love will eventually deteriorate under pressure.
3. Don't lose yourself.
Even in a relationship, your individuality is equally as important the relationship. Being a couple is simply combining two separate personalities. Who you are as a person makes up one-half of that. You can evolve for the better, but never lose yourself or compromise your core values.
4. Explore the world around you.
Many couples, especially young ones get so wrapped up in their relationship that they completely miss out on what's happening in the world around them. This world has so many things to offer, and it's impossible to know what you truly desire if you never explore them. Travel a bit and get some life experience under your belt before plunging headfirst into committed relationships.
5. Never settle.
Never settle for a mediocre relationship that doesn't make you happy. In the end, you will be miserable and possibly resent your partner.
6. Don't give up your dreams for a relationship.
Your dreams don't have to come to a halt simply because you fall in love. Continue to pursue your passions and your relationship will work out the way it is meant to be.
7. Life goes on.
When a relationship falls apart it feels life your world is crumbling down with it. It's important to remember that your romantic life is a small piece of many that make up who you are. This is your chance to unapologetically focus on you. Love will come around again when the time is right.
