The Rise Of Genderless Fashion As We Pull Away From Labels


Growing up, it’s likely that if you’re female your parents dressed you in frilly dresses and bows, and if you’re male your parents put you in little baby suits and ties. But now we’re living in a time where gender is not as simple as male or female, and this applies to fashion tenfold.

These days, women aren’t the only ones who wear skirts, and men aren’t the only ones who wear suits. We don't really care for labels and fashion has taken notice. In the past year, there has been an incredible rise in genderless fashion and social media has had its hand in why it's grown in popularity. Fashion influencers and celebrities have embraced gender neutral and even gender bending styles.

Stores like Zara have taken notice too and in March of 2016, the store decided release its very own fashion line that blurs the line between womenswear and menswear. The line includes jeans, shorts, sweatshirts, and tanks, and flew off the shelf almost instantly.


The millennial generation is all about inclusivity across the board, so it makes sense that genderless trends would come into fashion now. A study done by the Intellegence Group shows that:

"More than two-thirds of people ages 14 to 34 say gender no longer defines destiny or behavior as it once did."

Meaning the gender norms that our grandparents and even our parents grew up with, don't really matter as much as they did in the past. Zara isn’t alone in its quest for fashion equality. Brands like Louis Vuitton have featured progressive Jaden Smith in its women’s Spring 2016 collection, and H&M has Caitlyn Jenner as the face of their new upcoming sports collection.

So what does genderless clothing mean for the future of fashion? It means fashion houses and modeling agencies are broadening their scope and are looking to embrace everyone for who they are, no matter what race, size, gender, or age. It definitely is a step in the right direction.
