I love to start my mornings with a big ol’ cup o’ joe. It’s just a guilty pleasure of mine, and I’m sure I’m not the only one.
I work in an office full of coffee fiends. When I first started my job I barely drank coffee and now it’s basically the fuel that keeps me alive at work. If you’re looking for a good excuse to down your morning coffee (I know I am), here are seven for you.
1. It Improves energy levels.
This one is a given. The caffeine in your coffee will help give you a jolt out of that morning groggy feeling, and make you feel less tired. Once you drink your coffee and the caffeine is absorbed into the bloodstream in the brain, caffeine blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter called Adenosine.
According to Authority Nutrition, “Many controlled trials in humans show that coffee improves various aspects of brain function. This includes memory, mood, vigilance, energy levels, reaction times and general cognitive function.”
Sounds good to me.
2. It can help you burn fat.
Sign me up. Caffeine is found in almost every commercial fat burning supplement and it’s because it’s one of the rare natural substances that aids in fat burning. That’s right, a natural fat burner. According to Authority Nutrition, “studies show that caffeine can specifically increase the burning of fat, by as much as 10% in obese individuals and 29% in lean people.”
3. It’s loaded with essential nutrients.
Think drinking your coffee is a waste of empty calories? No way. By drinking your morning coffee you’re not only getting that sweet (or bitter), fresh roasted taste, but you’re getting riboflavin, pantothenic acid, manganese, potassium, magnesium, and niacin.
4. It reduces your risk of dying.
That sounds incredibly dramatic, but here are the facts—A National Institutes of Health – AARP Diet and Health study of more than 400,000 people found that male participants drinking even just one daily cup reduced their risk of death by 6%.
Drinking either two to three cups or six or more cups reduced the risk by 10% during the timeframe of the study.
5. It reduces your risk of getting Alzheimer's.
Alzheimer’s disease is nothing to be messed with. The incredibly debilitating disease is the leading cause of dementia and the most common neurodegenerative disease in the world. For preventative care, eat healthy, exercise, and drink coffee. Don’t believe me?
“Several studies show that coffee drinkers have up to a 65% lower risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease,” according to Authority Nutrition.
6. It legit makes you happier.
Coffee may actually be able to help curb your risk of depression and lift your mood when you’re feeling a bit down. Two specific studies were conducted that help back this up.
The first in a Harvard study published in 2011, which found that women who drank four or more cups per day had a 20% lower risk of becoming depressed. The second was done with 208,424 individuals, which found that those who drank four or more cups per day were 53% less likely to commit suicide.
7. It helps reduce pain.
A Norwegian study which observed 48 people performing office work, found that those who consumed coffee only declared a pain-intensity level of 41, whereas participants who didn’t drink any coffee reported having a score of 55. Interesting, huh? It doesn’t stop there.
According to World of Caffeine, “Caffeine has profound CNS effects that block the central processing of pain signals in the brain and that increase the effectiveness of the body’s natural pain killing mechanisms.”
I’m convinced coffee is the answer to all of life’s problems.
