We all have our go-to get hype songs for motivation, but what would that playlist look like if your '90s child-self put it together? What would you listen to to get hype for the 5th grade dance or just to hang out with your friends?
Evoke that TGIF-loving '90s kid with this nostalgic playlist:
1. Quad City DJ's - Space Jam
This was definitely playing at your first boy-girl party. But really EVERYTHING about Space Jam is perfect. The movie’s long-running website is probably the purest thing on the Internet. Look to the entire Space Jam soundtrack for sweet escape.
2. Boyz II Men - Motownphilly
If you’re like me, Boyz II Men really got on your radar with this Fresh Prince episode, after which you realized how everything they make is great. The Boyz introduce themselves in Motownphilly, in pretty much the most fun way ever.
3. Spice Girls - Spice Up Your Life
Wannabe is the obvious choice here, but any real fan knows that it’s pretty difficult to choose a standout. I chose this particular song because it’s the “biggest” sounding song, meant to be sung with all of your friends, preferably as you roller blade around the block.
4. Destiny’s Child - Jumpin', Jumpin'
This is one Destiny’s Child song (along with Say My Name) that has aged as beautifully as Beyonce.
5. Jennifer Lopez - Waiting For Tonight
J.Lo could do no wrong when she came out with Waiting For Tonight, it was the ultimate anticipation song of its time.
6. Aqua - Barbie Girl
A racy song about Barbie, this song hasn’t aged well, but it definitely brings you back to a very very specific point in time.
7. Vanilla Ice - Ninja Turtles Rap
“Have you ever seen a turtle get down?”
8. Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way
It’s hard to choose just one BSB track, but this again is one of the biggest sounding song of their singles.
9. Ray Parker Jr. - Ghostbusters
10. Missy Elliott - The Rain
“Me? I’m supa fly” Missy Elliot, endlessly underrated except by '90s kids.
11. Jimmy Eat World - The Middle
This tune is a great "everything will be O.K. and you’re different and that’s a good thing" song.
12. Sir Mix-A-Lot - Baby Got Back
Not marketed to kids exactly, but how were kids who grew up between 1990 and 1999 expected to resist it.
13. House Of Pain - Jump Around
Quintessential '90s jam.
14. Fraggle Rock Theme Song
It's from the '80s really, but that’s find.... “dance your cares away!”
15. Sisqo - Thong Song
Again, irresistible to kids.
16. All That Theme Song
You knew it was about to be lit when you heard this song.
17. Tag Team - Whoomp There It Is
This was playing when the Mighty Ducks went to South Central L.A. and Kenan Thompson showed them what’s up in Mighty Ducks: D2.
