Being awesome and playing Jane on Jane the Virgin, is not the ONLY thing Ging Rodriguez has up her sleeves. In fact, the actress has officially signed on to the remake of Miss Bala, a Mexican film that was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2011 Academy Awards.
As reported by Deadline, the Puerto Rican actress will star alongside newcomer Ismael Cruz Cordova, a Broadway and TV actor who became a household name on shows such as Sesame Street and Ray Donovan.
He's a hottie, so we're excited.
Rodriguez, according to Deadline, will portray "Gloria Meyer who, after her friend Suzu goes missing in Tijuana, finds herself a pawn in a dangerous game being played by the CIA, the DEA, and a charismatic young crime boss." Cordova will portray a "master manipulator and highly charismatic survivor" called Lino.
The remake of Miss Bala will be directed by Catherine Hardwicke, best known for her films Thirteen, Twilight, and Red Riding Hood.
The Oscar-nominated flick, which was directed by Gerardo Naranjo in 2011, is inspired by the true story of Miss Sinaloa Laura Zuñiga, a beauty queen who was arrested alongside gang members in 2008, according to Complex.
"Once I researched the real story, I wasn’t that interested in it, but the picture gave me precisely what I wanted: The idea of a victim who’s been involved with this lifestyle without knowing anything," Naranjo told the magazine. "There were many things I was trying to explain with the film. One, obviously, is the role of the victims and the experience that a normal person has when she finds herself involved with criminals, and another was the involvement of the DEA in the Mexican war, and another was all of the weapons coming in from the U.S. into Mexico. So there were many things that I wanted to talk about, and I guess the story of the beauty queen is what allowed me to go in and talk about all of them from a certain perspective," he added.
No premiere date has been announced for the upcoming flick, but we're already excited! In the meantime, check out the OG trailer below.
