We all have times when we are so worried about our problems that we can't even think of anything else, even if we have problems that cannot be resolved in the current moment.
This affects our body and mind, but scientists have discovered a way to cope with the problem - participating in an activity that prevents us from thinking about anything else.
We all love to play mindless games on our phones, but there's really nothing better than Tetris for a basic distraction. It requires our minds to concentrate on ordering the blocks and we can zone out from other issues.
However, there are other activities that also work for the flow state such as carpentry, sports and even other video games similar to Tetris.
The power of distraction
There are many things that can keep our minds occupied, for example, the results of a job interview or an exam.
The flow of Tetris leads to a state of distraction that's not easy to reach on your own, which is part of the goal of the game. Getting to the upper levels is rather easy to achieve but it is just challenging enough to keep you from thinking about bigger problems.
There's scientific proof that Tetris is useful!
In order to determine that Tetris is actually good for your mental health, researchers at the University of California analyzed 290 students. Upon beginning the study, they were told that someone would be giving them the results of an exam or job offer - but it was really a psychological test. While waiting for results, they played Tetris.
They were then told the true intent of the study and responded to questions about distraction, flow state, and so on. The results were published in Emotion magazine.
