After nearly 100 years, Miss America is making major changes to the pageant for an empowering reason. One of them is eliminating the swimwear portion.
On Tuesday, the official Miss America social media accounts teased fans with a video of a white bikini disappearing into thin air. "We’re changing out of our swimsuits and into a whole new era #byebyebikini #MissAmerica2019."
Why is the beauty competition getting rid of swimsuits? Because as of 2019, they want to make Miss America a more inclusive competition for women of all shapes and sizes.
"We will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance. That's huge," said chairwoman of the board of directors, Gretchen Carlson, on Good Morning America.
Carlson further explained that the swimsuit portion will be replaced by a segment where the candidates will "highlight their achievements and goals in life and how they will use their talents, passion, and ambition to perform the job of Miss America," according to CNN.
During the evening gown competition, the candidates will be able to wear whatever they want. The new changes have been powered by the rise of the #MeToo movement, notes CNN.
"We're experiencing a cultural revolution in our country with women finding the courage to stand up and have their voices heard on many issues," Carlson said in the statement. "Miss America is proud to evolve as an organization and join this empowerment movement."
