The phrase "faithful as a dog" came to life in Max, an Australian cattle herder who stood by his owner, a 3-year-old girl, lost in the woods. The incident took place in Queensland, a wooded village in northeastern Australia, where the girl lives with her grandmother.

As if it were a kind of fable, the little girl moved too far from home and lost her way, but Max accompanied her every step of the way. His company and subsequent action were essential to find the little girl, one day later.

The rescue

Aurora is the little girl who disappeared around 3 p.m. on a Friday. Residents and officials searched the area and followed her trace but had no luck finding her. About 15 hours after she disappeared, the little girl finally returned home.

The Police involved in the case assured that it was all thanks to Max, even though more than 100 Emergency Service volunteer officers participated in the exploration. Officials found Max first and then Aurora. They say that they were shouting the girl's name, which alerted the dog to run towards the rescue group.

The dog then took them to where the girl was, up the mountain, almost one and a half miles away from her house. Everything indicates that Max was next to his owner at all times. Aurora was found with some cuts and scrapes on her body, but officials said it could be much worse, considering the climate of the place and that it was raining the day she got lost.

"The area around the house is quite mountainous and is very inhospitable terrain to go walking in, so she'd travelled quite a distance with her dog that was quite loyal to her," ABC News Australia reported.

Impressed by the dog's courage and loyalty, the officers did not hesitate to declare Max an honorary member of the Police.

Elderly and disabled

If the story does not seem impressive enough, you may be surprised to learn that Max is 17 years old; a striking age considering that these dogs live between 10 to 13 years. The dog is also deaf and has visual problems. Thanks, Max! What you did for Aurora will never be forgotten!
