Nilo Veloso, a 66-year-old from Ceará in Brazil, used to smoke three packs of cigarettes per day, but managed to quit after 34 years. He made the decision of quitting after suffering serious consequences.
Cigarette money went to travel
Nicotine-free for the past 13 years, the retiree now saves all of his money in a jar that he opens once a year. Everything in his piggy bank is spent on travel, hobbies, and home improvements.
"I started smoking when I was about 20, it was considered cool back then. I started to smoke more and more until I began smoking three packs a day in the last two years, and then I stopped on July 24, 2005," recalls the retiree.
Veloso says that his addiction was so big that he did not even eat breakfast to buy smokes. In fact, he'd wake up, take a sip of water, and start smoking.
Until one day, when he was 54, he began to feel very sick while he smoked and drove. "I was dizzy, everything went dark, I had to stop the car because of the blurry sight, I threw the cigarette out and asked Our Lady of Fatima for help," he recalls.
Decision to quit smoking
He made the decision to quit after the scare and promised to not smoke ever again and save all the money he would initially spend on cigarettes. Not only did he change his lifestyle, but has also kept all of the money to this day.
"I had used medicine, the patch, and nothing helped me quit. But I did not need anything after the scare. I feel that Our Lady of Fatima helped me, it was a miracle," he assured.
How was his money invested?
With the money he has saved over the past 13 years, Nilo has traveled with his wife to Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, twice to Serra Gaúcha, bought new furniture for his house, changed the mattress of his bed, bought a computer, and an $ 11,800 carbon bike that he uses to peddle go bike riding with friends four times a week.
Last year he traveled to Aracaju to visit a childhood friend. In 2018, he intends to use to fulfill his dream of going to Rio de Janeiro during Carnaval.
Happy to quit smoking
After more than ten years since the day he decided to change his life, Veloso says he has never felt like smoking and that everything has changed for the better.
"It was so much nicotine that I had to wash all the clothes in the closet when I stopped smoking. At the beginning of 2006 I started biking and today I bike 28 km on Tuesday and Thursday and more than 50 km of Saturday and Sunday. My hair has improved, my skin is clearer, and even the taste of the water is different," he celebrates.
