Student athletes are a pretty big deal on college campuses, but Zack Williams doesn’t seem nervous around them at all. The Penn State student approached football player Torrence Brown to give him a snack, and the moment went viral on Twitter.
Zack, who was born with Down Syndrome, and his friend Kacie Hay usually walk to class together, and on one such instance, Zack stopped Torrence to say hi. Kacie wrote on Love What Matters that Torrence, who was also walking to class, happily stopped to give him a handshake and ask him how his day was. Since then, Torrence always stopped to say hi to Zack whenever they ran into each other.
Kacie told Buzzfeed that Zack loves the athletes, and that when they walk to class, he makes sure to say hi to each one he sees. Unfortunately, Torrence got injured in a football game and hurt his knee. When Zack found out, he wanted to give his friend a little gift to make him feel better.
“I asked Zack if he realized that his buddy had hurt his knee,” she wrote on Love What Matters. “He said ‘Oh my goodness I didn’t realize!’ And was a little upset that he had not taken notice to Torrence’s injury. He told me he wanted to give him a get well soon gift to lift his spirits.”
Cookies were the obvious answer, so Kacie’s mom whipped them up. When Zack ran up to give Torrence the snack, the football player stood up from the electric scooter he was driving to give him a hug and a thank you. Zack was thrilled! Is your heart bursting?!
Kacie took a picture of the tender moment and posted it on Twitter in late September. Since then, it’s amassed over 30k likes and over 5.5k re-tweets. Torrence retweeted Kacie’s post, saying, “My man Zack really made my day!! Really enjoyed the cookies!! Made me feel a lot better (:” His post has 75,787 re-tweets and 296,036 likes.

A few days after the heartwarming encounter, Torrence tweeted a link to a fundraising page that Zack had set up to raise awareness for Down Syndrome. Kacie told Buzzfeed that everyone’s love and positivity has been “overwhelming.” Naturally so! Twitter buzzed with hilarious memes of people happy crying and expressing how amazing their interaction was, and how heartwarming their friendship is. It's a beautiful example of love and kindness, and, as one commenter put it, showing "what brings us together and not what sets us apart."
