I'm the kind of person who could probably burn water if you left me alone with it, so imagine my panic at the mere thought of cooking Thanksgiving dinner.

Thankfully, there are tons of recipes floating around on the Internet that outline the steps one-by-one, and I won't be alone in the kitchen on Thanksgiving day, so the chances of me ruining the holiday are slim. Still possible, but slim.

Nevertheless, if you're like me, you're going to want to remember these helpful kitchen tips to avoid burning your house down.

Seriously, no one wants that. Good luck.

1. Don’t leave food unattended.

Stir any sauces and turn any meats and veggies, so that they don’t stick to the bottom of the pan, which can cause burning.

2. Don’t wear loose clothing.

Unless you're okay with your sleeves catching fire.

3. If you’re going to fry your turkey, make sure you do it outside and in the open.

For the love of God, deep fry your turkey outside, at least 20 feet from your house. Make sure it's fully thawed before you dip it; otherwise, the oil could bubble up on the sides. 

4. Make sure you remove ALL the packaging.

This includes stickers! Not only can they burn, but how embarrassing is it going to be when your little cousin spits up a vegetable sticker?

5. Use quality cookware.

Cheap pots and pans are made from low-quality materials, so they don’t heat evenly and are quick to burn.

6. Clean your stove top.

We tend to overlook specks of sauce and little pieces of rice and pasta, but when you turn on your stove the next time you cook, they can burn. Be wary of rogue crumbs and make sure you wipe your stove top down. That goes for the bottoms of your pots and pans too.

7. Make sure your foods don’t stick to the pan.

Create a slick surface on the bottom of your pan by coating it with oil. This ensures that anything you’re cooking will slide with ease.

8. Distribute the heat evenly.

In order to ensure that heat doesn’t stay in one place for too long—especially on old stoves—rotate your pots and pans so that heat reaches all areas under the cookware.
