With New Year’s Eve right around the corner, we’re all thinking about what’s important: what we’re going to wear, what party we’re going to, and what we’re going to be drinking. What friends will we be hanging out with?
However, there’s also a few other, really important things to think about that involve our safety. I hate to sound like your mom here, but you do need to be careful when you go out that night. The city will be alive with events, and many people will be out celebrating, which also means there’s a lot of chances of people getting into trouble.
If you want to have a great NYE night and not deal with any drama, try these six tips for staying safe.
1. Take Uber.
DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE. Be smart and take on Uber or a Lyft, or try taking public transportation like the subway or train if you have it available in your city. The last thing you want to do is try and get behind the wheel and pose a serious threat to yourself and others. Sit back and let other, sober, people drive you around for the night.
2. Keep watch over your drink.
I know it seems like something that only happens in movies, BUT roofies do exist and a slew of other drugs that you don’t want in your drink. Just make sure not to leave your drink down and walk away. If you need to use the restroom take your drink with you or leave it with a friend you trust.
3. Limit what you take.
In order to not have to worry so much about losing something like your phone or wallet, make sure to opt for a small clutch or bag with just the essentials like your ID, keys, and phone. Try to leave the expensive makeup, excess cards and cash, and jewelry, etc. at home. The less you walk around with, the less you’ll need.
4. Stay with your friends.
Remember, there is safety in numbers. Don’t wander off alone, especially after you’ve been drinking. Always remain with your group of friends and don’t pull away. You can all keep an eye out for each other and that will help keep you safe. If someone notices something strange happening, they cannot alert another person in the group and get help if they need to.
5. Eat something before you drink.
I know, I know, you can handle your liquor, but please remember to have some dinner before you head out to drink. You can even make it fun and go out as a group to a nice restaurant before heading to the party, or maybe just getting some pizza. Remember, tonight is all about having fun, so treat yoself (to some great food).
6. Report alcohol poisoning.
Okay, on a serious note, please be sure to keep an eye out for your friends. If you notice that someone is showing signs of alcohol poisoning, please call 911.
