In an interview with Mic., Jane the Virgin star Jaime Camil, who plays Jane’s father, Rogelio, had something to say about Mexican cinema and Latino representation in the media.
If you haven’t watched Jane, you probably wouldn’t know that the show is about a Latino family living in Miami, and touches on tons of social topics like abortion, immigration, and, as the title suggests, sex. It really is a show that represents Latinos as they are: just regular people.
Camil told Mic. that Jane portrays Latinos with respect, and “Just because we’re Latinos doesn’t mean we need to have hot pink houses and piñatas and shout things like ‘Tacos! Fiestas!’”
“The success of Jane is that it’s about human beings, not necessarily a surging demographic. It’s by human beings, for human beings, not just [people of] a certain ethnicity.”
“We’re a powerful Latino cast,” he said, “the characters are humans and the show is written for a mainstream market.”
Furthermore, he went on to praise Mexican cinema and used actors Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna as examples of Mexico’s exports in the industry.
As for the political atmosphere, he said that Jane has a way of balancing real issues in both a light, yet serious, way.
“It looks those issues straight in the eyes—like the new president,” he said. “It’s like Jane is saying, ‘It’s OK to talk about this and confront it.’ But Jane does it with the lighthearted tone of Jane.”
After the shocker that was this week’s episode, it’s no surprise that the hit show was renewed for a fourth season in early January.
We’re excited to see how Jane continues breaking barriers. As for Camil, he jokes that he’s “happy to be on the list of employed actors in Los Angeles.”
Can’t argue with that.
