Because no one learned their lesson the last time, Steve Harvey will be hosting the Miss Universe 2016 pageant in the Philippines, alongside supermodel Ashley Graham, New York Daily News reports.
In case you forgot, Harvey hosted the 2015 pageant and made headlines after announcing the wrong winner.
In what was possibly the most awkward moment in the history of television, he declared Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, the winner, and then quickly backtracked, saying, “OK folks, I have to apologize. The first runner up is Colombia. Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines.”
Harvey took full responsibility for the mistake, but told TODAY that during rehearsals, the runner-up section was never on the card.
"I read the teleprompter, and clearly I read what it said to read," he said in his January 2016 interview with TODAY’s Natalie Morales, which he gave alongside Miss Colombia. "And then I followed the direct instruction in my ear. We went straight from 'And the new 2015 Miss Universe is...' and when they said read the card, all the cards in rehearsal never had any of that on there, except the name.”
Ashley Graham, a host on America’s Next Top Model who’s landed multiple coveted magazine covers herself, made the announcement on Twitter yesterday.
Gutierrez was a certified champ about the whole thing, also telling Morales that “everyone is able to make mistakes.”
Let’s hope Harvey doesn’t make any more mistakes this time around. At least we can probably expect some self-depreciating jokes from him when the 2016 pageant airs on Jan. 29.
