The mobile app game has been booming in 2016 and the two more popular games showcase some of our favorites Nintendo characters. Pokémon Go was an instant smash hit that continues to get better. Now, Super Mario Run hit the app store running fast enough to break app store records.
Expectations for the game were high prior to release and after the release Apptopia reported that the game hit 2.85 million downloads on the first day, while App Annie said that number was closer to 10 million downloads.
Now that Nintendo has actually released the official numbers we see that Super Mario Run surpassed 40 million downloads in just the first four days and now ranks first in the free games category in 140 countries around the world. To give you a scope of how big of a deal this is, Pokémon Go didn't reach this milestone until 11 days after its release.
Nintendo has yet to say how much revenue they have made from the game at this point. Keep in mind that the game is free to download, but users will have to pay $9.99 in order to unlock all of the games features. It will be interesting to see how bringing Super Mario to smartphones for the first time pays off for Nintendo.
