I love lipstick. I am a lipstick kind of person—shiny, matte, liquid to matte, metallic, I've tried all kinds and then some. But makeup is a trial and error process that can get pretty frustrating, not to mention super pricey. You can't return makeup you buy and try on, so a lot of us end up accumulating items we never use. But don't worry, I've tried tons and I gotchu.
Before you set out, you should know that if you're here because you want to curb your bad makeup habits in 2017, you'll need to go without buying shades just because they're trending or because they look great on other people. It helps to think about what type of lipstick you love and wear most often.
If you like long-lasting and pigmented color, opt for liquid to mattes (you can always gloss it up!). If you like a little more leeway with color and don't mind reapplying more often, go for classic stick formulas (you can apply translucent powder to shiny lipstick for the matte look!).
So keep that in mind as you look through the only 6 lipstick shades you'll ever need.
1. A Nude
Everybody needs that "your lips but better" nude shade. This is your go-to for lazy days when you wanna keep is casual and natural but don't wanna go bare-lipped, or for classy events where you'd like to look subtle or go for drama around the eyes.
Bonus: There are tons of guides online that help you find the perfect nude shade for your skin tone; nudes are notoriously hard to match, but when you find yours you won't know how you lived without it.
2. A Pink
Flirty and pretty, a pink is a must-have in your repertoire.
If your lips are already pink-toned, opt for a pink that doesn't settle as a nude. In general, subtler pink shades are when-in-doubt colors because most people feel comfortable wearing them, but if you tend toward loud and proud and you know you're gonna wear it often, reach for that bold pink, boo.
3. A "Classic" Red
Sure, there's a "classic" red, but what's your classic red? Depending on your preference, you'll wanna go for a cool blue-toned red, a warm orange-toned red, a muted vintage red...the options are endless! Don't let the standard dictate the shade that you rock the best. This red should be wearable day or night and should make you feel classy and sexy.
Pro-tip: Red smears so use lip liner. To remove any lipstick from the inner lips that could get on your teeth, put your finger into your mouth, close your lips around it, and pop it back out.
4. A Vampy Red
This is your nighttime special red. Of course, you can wear whatever you like at anytime you like because you can rock it, but keep in mind that this shade should be different from your classic red. This is a sultrier creature-of-the-night color and should make you feel like you're on the hunt.
This shade is the one you'll reach for when you have a girls' night out or when you're on the path to seduction. Prowl.
5. A Plum
The quintessential Fall color. A purple-toned shade is intimidating for a lot of people, but trust me it looks great on you ;). Plum colors looks fantastic on everyone and instantly embolden and spice up any outfit.
The trick is (and stop me if you've heard it before) to find a plum that goes with your skin tone! Once you do, you'll wanna wear it all the time, even when you're not out and about getting your PSL fix.
6. Something Bold
This is the slot you use for that blue or lilac lipstick you've been eyeing. But remember that if simplicity is your goal, limit yourself to one!
I know it's hard and you want all the funky shades, but you'll appreciate these colors more if you use them one at a time and have to replace them after you've used them up. it'll give you more incentive to think your purchase through and make this pick really worth it.
You won't regret your decision to set boundaries for your collection when you notice you've stopped compulsively reaching for lipsticks at the drugstore (is that just me?), love every single color you own, and look gorgeous wearing every shade.
