Camila Cabello’s departure from Fifth Harmony shook fans to the core. The group has only been together since 2012, so let’s be real, Harmonizers saw no signs of Cabello calling it quits quite so soon.
Hindsight is 20/20 though. As we look back at the few months leading up to her heartbreaking announcement, there are really clear hints she wasn’t happy. Adding salt to the wound, the remaining four girls shared how they pleaded with her to not leave them just yet.
Cabello’s thirst to go solo had been churning in her mind. Her intention was crystal clear in her interview on Lena Dunham’s podcast, which taped prior to her quitting the group. She recounted how her X Factor audition was pretty much her quinceañera, since she didn’t want a party her only request was to be driven to the auditions in North Carolina.
She didn’t make the cut as a solo artist. Her saving grace came when she was paired with four other strangers and offered the chance to compete as a group. Fifth Harmony has two albums under their belt, Reflection and 7/27, the latter of which really took their fame to new levels.
However, even as the group toured, Cabello was leveling up her solo career. With features on a track with Shawn Mendes and a more recent one with Machine Gun Kelly, as well as writing her own music in hotel bathrooms, she seemed to always be ready for the next step.
“I always say like Fifth Harmony is kind of a character or a person outside all of us. I feel like we would all make different styles of music and individually we are totally different than what we represent in the group,” Cabello told Dunham.
There’s no doubt that joining a group of any kind makes you lose a sense of your uniqueness and passions. Every group has seen their demise because of that. Zayn, Beyoncé, and Romeo Santos each felt the need to fly like a free bird. The only difference between those names and Cabello is that they dedicated five albums worth of time to their groups, she dipped after two.
The remaining four girls aren't giving up on their Harmonizers though. They'll appear for the first time as four in harmony at the 2017 People's Choice Awards.
