Marvel fans, you’re in for a treat. Not to bring your hopes up too high, but Latina bada*s Gina Rodriguez has eagerly expressed her interest in playing America Chavez, Marvel’s first queer Latina superhero, if they were ever to make her story into a movie. She. Would. Be. PERFECT.
At the 2017 SXSW conference, Rodriguez was speaking on a panel about diversity in Hollywood, when she casually dropped that she’s “patiently waiting for Marvel to start a project for a female Latina lead so he can hopefully gain the part,” Geeks of Color reports.
Post-panel, the folks at Geeks of Color got to chat with the Jane the Virgin star, and asked her if she had heard of America Chavez. Rodriguez HAD, so much so that she name dropped Gaby Rivera, the writer of the America Chavez comic book series.
She excitedly pointed to her manager and told Geeks of Color that she’s a huge fan, and that if Marvel ever decides to make an America Chavez movie, her manager already knows to get her in audition.
America Chavez first stepped into the limelight in 2013 as part of the Young Avengers, a group of world-saving teens (naturally) including Wiccan, Hulkling, Hawkeye, Loki, and Marvel Boy.
In October 2016, Marvel tweeted that “America” #1 would be coming soon, and in November, confirmed that the first issue would be out in March.
