Colors make our lives vibrant. The sky bursts into warm pinks and golds when the sun sets. The ocean glitters with white hot speckles as gorgeous azure waves crash against the shore. Flowers are bright pinks and purple, and even the clothes we wear signal how we are feeling.
If you've ever been down, there is a good chance you didn't wear orange or yellow. When we're feeling low, we tend to move towards darker colors like navy or black. What do colors have to do with our feelings, though?
Every color has a meaning, and psychologically, they can impact the way we behave. Pink is known to have a calming effect on people. In fact, according to The New York Times,
When children under detention at the San Bernardino County Probation Department in California become violent, they are put in an 8-foot by 4-foot cell with one distinctive feature - it is bubble gum pink. The children tend to relax, stop yelling and banging and often fall asleep within 10 minutes, said Paul E. Boccumini, director of clinical services for the department.
Colors are also tied to the seven different energy systems each person has. These are called "chakras," and before things get real metaphysical, allow me to explain what these even are. "Chakras" are described as seven different energy systems in the body that look like invisible spinning wheels. They continuously turn and when they are balanced, we enjoy good health, happiness, and other positive emotional and physical benefits.
However, different events in our lives can affect the way these "wheels" turn. They can become overactive or underactive, and show negative emotional and physical symptoms ranging from muscle pain, headaches, sadness, and anxiety.
When you go through heartbreak, the chakra that is affected is the heart or the Anahata. This is the chakra that is most associated with love and governs feeling of connectedness with others and compassion.
Emotional signs that your heart chakra is blocked is feeling withdrawn, not wanting to be around others, being really critical of yourself, feeling very stoic and not emotional, and feeling isolated.
There are several different ways that you can heal and balance your heart chakra, and this includes meditating and using mantras. However, one of the easiest ways to make yourself feel better and heal in this difficult time is to wear green clothes and surround yourself with the color. Add plants to your room and carry green stones with you, like jade and chrysoprase.
So if you've been feeling down over a recent heartbreak, try pulling out that gorgeous green blouse. Tell yourself "I am open to love," and it will find its way to you in no time.
