Who would've ever thought that a designer bag would become a trending topic? Certainly not me, but it did.
Balenciaga, a French luxury fashion house founded by Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga, introduced its "Arena Extra-Large Shopper Tote Bag" as part of its 2017 collection. Isn't it fab? Perfect for a fancy summer trip. There's only one problem, however, the bougy bag looks like an exact replica of IKEA's shopping tote.
It's hard not to become the center of a social media frenzy when the luxurious accessory has lots of similarities with the IKEA tote. Both bags share the same bright blue color, both bags are rather big and spacious, both bags have thick straps, and both bags go super cute with just about any outfit.
But here's the catch: Because the Balenciaga bag is made out of "blue wrinkled, glazed leather" it sells for $2,145.
That's about 71 cute designer purses/bags you can buy at any department store—just throwing that out there. Like, unless you've got the money to do it, buy it. Otherwise, take your $1 to IKEA and get your very own recycled OG version!
"We are deeply flattered that the Balenciaga tote bag resembles the Ikea iconic sustainable blue bag for 99 cents," IKEA reps told Today. "Nothing beats the versatility of a great big blue bag!"
And of course, the internet came out to play, including IKEA in the UK.
